The software update can be downloaded over the air (OTA), when you are connected to the internet. You can choose to start the installation immediately or at a later time.
This article is applicable to models with Google built-in.
Note
Software updates are free as long as you update your vehicle on a regular basis. If you don't, you may need to visit a workshop to be able to get the updates over the air again. A workshop-assisted software update may incur a fee.
Certain software releases can only be installed by workshops. If this applies to your vehicle, you'll be notified.
Updating your vehicle's software includes two steps:
Note
Downloading software updates
Each vehicle has a unique configuration and not all vehicles are updated at the same time with the same software. You only receive a download notification if it is applicable to your vehicle.
An internet connection provided by the vehicle's built-in SIM card is required when downloading software updates. Downloading via personal SIM or Wi-Fi is currently not supported.

and press .Installing a new software version
When the software has downloaded, you'll receive a notification in the vehicle's center display and via the Volvo Cars mobile app, along with instructions on how to proceed with installing the new software. An internet connection is not required for this.
You can install the software in two ways:
- For fully electric vehicles, the high-voltage battery level must be at least 40%.
- For plug-in hybrids, software installation is not available during charging. However, if the vehicle is fully charged, with the charging cable still attached to the vehicle, software installation can proceed.
- The vehicle needs to be locked.
It is not possible to access or drive your vehicle during the installation. It's a good idea to install the update overnight because it can take up to 90 minutes to complete.
Important
- Accessing the vehicle during the installation process risks interrupting or terminating the installation. This may cause problems with the vehicle's functions.
- If you urgently need to access your vehicle, you will need to use the key blade. This is because the key fob's ranged function is disabled during the installation. Read more about opening the vehicle with a key blade in the user manual.
Installing software via the Volvo Cars app on your phone:
You can choose to start the installation immediately or schedule it for a later time via the push notification on your phone. You can also open the app, press the vehicle tab

Installing software via the vehicle's center display:
You can choose to start the installation immediately or schedule it for a later time. If you choose to postpone the installation, you can easily find the notification again by swiping down from the top of the display to access your notifications.
A notification is shown in the center display and the Volvo Cars app when the installation has been completed.
Note
- If the installation wasn't successful, contact a Volvo retailer.
- If you experience any issues with the software installation or with the vehicle in any other way, contact Volvo Cars customer service (via phone or the Volvo Cars app) or your Volvo workshop.
