Getting started with voice control

Voice control allows you to control functions in the vehicle, e.g. radio or a connected cellular phone, using voice commands. In cars with Sensus Navigation, you can also integrate with the navigation system.

What is voice control?

The voice control system allows you to control certain infotainment and climate functions using voice commands. The system can respond with speech and by displaying information in the driver display.

Voice control is a support function that can help simplify the use of various commands in your vehicle. It basically works like a regular application in which you input information in a specific order to perform a task, but instead of typing on a keyboard, you use voice commands. It may therefore be a good idea to familiarize yourself with how, and in what order, a voice command should be spoken to get the desired result.

Below is an introduction and general instructions for starting to use voice control in your vehicle. Follow the links in "Related information" for more specific information on how voice control can be used in five different areas: "navigation1", "vehicle climate control", "phone", "text messages" and "radio and media".

 Note

Not all system languages support voice control. If a system language supports voice control, it is marked with a P5–1507–Voice control button symbol in the list of available system languages. For more info on which system languages are supported, see Language settings for voice control.

Starting voice control

Getting started with voice recognition

 Note

Settings and menus in the center display vary depending on software version.

Commands are given by carrying out a "dialog" with the voice control system. Briefly pressing the voice control button P5–1507–Voice control button on the right-hand side of the steering wheel starts a dialog. When you have pressed this button, you will hear a beep and the voice control symbol will be shown in the instrument panel.

This indicates that the system has begun listening and you can now start giving spoken commands. As soon as you begin speaking, recognition is trained to understand your voice. This takes several seconds and is done automatically, which means that you do not need to start any manual voice training.

Using voice control

When you are in dialog with the system, speak at a natural speed and with a normal tone of voice. Generally, the system will listen for a basic command followed by more detailed data specifying what you want the system to do.

To change the system volume, turn the volume knob while the voice is speaking. You can use other buttons while using voice control. However, other sound will be muted during dialogue with the system, which means that it is not possible to execute any functions linked with sound using the buttons.

Canceling voice control

To cancel voice control, do one of the following:

  • Hold down the voice control button P5–1507–Voice control button until you hear two beeps.
  • Briefly press the voice control button P5–1507–Voice control button and say "Cancel".

Voice control will also be canceled if you do not respond during a dialog. The system will first ask three times for a response and if the response is still not given, voice control will be automatically canceled.

Entering a destination using the phone book's list of contacts

You can use the command "Go to [contact]" to enter the address of a phone book contact as a destination. However, the address must be spelled correctly and entered without abbreviations in order to be found in the map database. To check the spelling of addresses in HERE's database, go to wego.here.com.

Updating voice control

The voice control system in your vehicle is under continuous improvement. You can download update files yourself. For further information, see Updating voice control.

General commands

The following commands can be used regardless of the situation:

  • "Repeat" - repeats the last voice instruction.
  • "Cancel" – terminates the dialogue.
  • "Help" – starts a help dialogue. The system responds with commands that can be used in the current situation, an instruction or an example.
