When it comes to electric cars, certified range figures are often the starting point. It’s the figure that appears in headlines and configurators, measured under standardised test cycles such as WLTP (most regions), CLTC (China) and the EPA range (US and Canada).
But as many EV drivers know, range isn’t just a number. It depends on how and where you drive.
Temperature, speed, road conditions and even climate settings all influence how far an electric car can go. The challenge is helping drivers understand what that means in practice, without overcomplicating things.
Available on Volvo Cars websites, the Range Calculator translates certified range into an easy-to-understand estimate based on real-world scenarios. By adjusting factors like outside temperature, driving mix and climate use, drivers can see how range changes depending on their conditions.
“The certified range number is valid and very important,” says Roy Ogink, technical leader in the team behind the tool. “What we’re doing is adding context, so customer expectations can match the reality of various scenarios from the start.”
Certified versus real-world
Certified range is measured under standardised controlled conditions: a set driving cycle in a lab, with climate control turned off, no wind and a pleasant temperature. It’s built to provide a consistent baseline for fairness and comparison, and it’s the same standardised set-up for every carmaker.
Real-life driving can, of course, look different.
“It might be winter,” Roy says. “You might be driving faster, carrying passengers or using the climate system more. All of that affects energy consumption, because physics is physics. It’s no different than the efficiency and range of an ICE car being impacted by the driving conditions.”

“The idea is to help consumers become more aware of the different factors that impact range and not only focus on one single number, so they can drive with more confidence,” Roy says.
