Interventions and warnings when exiting the car

To make exiting the car safer, your car can warn you of traffic approaching from behind and prevent you from opening a door.

Door opening alert detection areasBlind spot alert in wing mirror

When the car detects traffic that is about to pass close to the car's sides, such as approaching cyclists, vehicles or scooters, a light appears in the wing mirror. If you begin to open the door on the side of the detected traffic, the door opening alert intensifies and a sound alert can be heard along with the light in the wing mirror. Your car can also prevent you from opening the door into oncoming traffic by briefly holding the door.

The alerts and interventions can be provided when the car is stationary and as long as an occupant is still detected inside the car.

Note

Overriding door opening prevention

You can still open the door if the car has prevented it. Once it's safe to open the door, you can firmly pull the inner door handle twice, a long pull each time.

Tip

Door opening alerts and blind spot information

Door opening alerts are indicated in a similar way to alerts about vehicles in your blind spot. These two features also rely on the same rear radars for detection of traffic.

Limitations

The car uses its rear radar system to detect approaching traffic. Be sure to read about radar and detection conditions and limitations in their separate section of the manual.

Radar detection areas.

Your car only detects approaching objects travelling at 9–140 km/h (5.5-87 mph).

Important

Door opening alerts and prevention are supplements to safe user practices. The driver and passengers are fully responsible for making sure that the car doors can be safely opened.
