Downloading and installing OTA software updates

All over-the air (OTA) software updates consist of two phases: a downloading phase and an installation phase.

This article is applicable to models with Google built-in.

 Note

There may be text differences in the centre display depending on the car model.

Downloading OTA updates

The software downloads in the background when the car is connected to the internet. The downloading time depends on the size of the software.

EX30: You can enable automatic software downloads in the Volvo EX30 app:
Go to the car tab Px-2037-VOC app icon Car and press Car software.
Enable Over-the-air updates.
EX90: You can enable automatic software downloads in the centre display.
Press the car symbol Px-2037-VOC app icon Car in the bottom bar.
Go to Settings > System > Software update.
Enable Automatic software download.

All cars with Google built-in except EX30 and EX90: You can enable automatic software downloads in the centre display.

Go to iCup-2037-Settings symbol > System > Software update.
Enable Automatic software download.

If you don't want to enable automatic software downloads, a notification is shown every time you enter your car asking if the software can be downloaded.

Installing OTA updates

When the software has downloaded, you will receive a notification in the car's centre display along with instructions on how to proceed.

You can choose to start the installation immediately or at a later time. If you choose to postpone the installation, you can easily find the notification again by swiping down from the top of the display to access your notifications.

Press Install now in the centre display. Leave the car and lock the doors.

A notification is shown in the centre display and the Volvo Cars / Volvo EX30 app when the installation has been completed.

It is not advisable to access your car during the installation. It's a good idea to install the update overnight as it can take up 90 minutes to complete.

 Note

Prerequisites for starting an OTA installation:
  • For fully electric cars, the high-voltage battery level must be at least 40%.
  • For plug-in hybrids, software installation is not available during charging. However, if the car is fully charged, with the charging cable still attached to the car, software installation can proceed.
  • The car needs to be locked.

Note that you cannot drive the car during the installation.

 Important

  • Accessing the car during the installation process risks interrupting or terminating the installation. This may cause problems with the car's functions.
  • If you urgently need to access your car, you will need to use the key blade. This is because the key fob's ranged function is disabled during the installation. Read more about opening the car with a key blade in the user manual.

  • If the installation is not successful, please contact your Volvo dealer.
  • If you experience any issues with the OTA update installation, or issues with the car in any other way, do not hesitate to contact Volvo Cars customer service (via phone or the Volvo Cars / Volvo EX30 app) or your Volvo workshop.
