Volvo EX30: Winning awards before it’s even hit the road
The new EX30 small SUV is winning awards before it has even started shipping. Which bodes well for its Australian debut.

The new Volvo EX30 is winning awards even before it has hit the road. The latest edition to the Volvo Cars family has been crowned Car of the Year by the Sun – ahead of any other electric, petrol, diesel or hybrid car. It’s also been named Small SUV/Crossover of the Year in the News UK Motor Awards. Which bodes well for the EX30’s forthcoming Australian debut.
The Sun Motors Editor, Rob Gill, was won over by the EX30 after taking it for a test drive in Sweden last month and subsequently predicting big things for “Volvo’s new dinky SUV”.
Per Gill: “It’s everything you expect a modern Volvo to be — safe, Scandi cool and sustainable — at a price you’d never expect.”
“The EX30 is going to be a huge hit. We’re utterly convinced of it. Not only does it take home our Small SUV/Crossover of the Year crown, it is the stand-out winner as The Sun Car of the Year.”
“Its success will be pivotal to the growth of our brand, taking our leadership in electrified motoring to a higher level.”
Winning the News UK Small SUV/Crossover award meant the EX30 had to convince motoring specialists across the publisher’s national media platforms, including broadsheets The Times and The Sunday Times, of its credentials.
“Savvy buyers have been holding out for an electric SUV that’s smart looking, has vim and zest, and doesn’t break the bank,” said The Sunday Times Motoring Editor, Nick Rufford. “This mini-Volvo’s starting price undercuts not only its electric rivals, but plenty of petrol SUVs, too.”
Kristian Elvefors, Volvo Car UK Managing Director, is naturally in agreement with the motoring experts.
“We could not hope for a better response to our newest model,” said Elvefors. “These awards confirm our belief that the Volvo EX30 will help us reshape people’s perceptions of pure electric motoring with a car that suits their lifestyles, their driving needs and, importantly, their budgets.
“Its success will be pivotal to the growth of our brand, taking our leadership in electrified motoring to a higher level.”
The EX30 is Volvo Cars’ smallest ever SUV. In addition to battery electric power that produces zero tailpipe emissions, it has been developed with a focus on keeping its carbon footprint to a minimum, across the complete vehicle lifecycle.
In Australia, the EX30 will come in two versions: a rear wheel drive Single Motor Extended Range model with a 69kW battery capacity; and an all wheel drive Twin Motor Performance model with 315kW (428hp) and a 69kWh battery. Both have a range of up to 540km* on a full charge and using the fastest DC public chargers can be charged from 10-80 per cent capacity in as little as 27 minutes.
