Wagon, going, gone: Last remaining V60s as Volvo goes all SUV, for now

Fans of Volvo Car’s V60 wagons can still buy one – but only for a few more weeks. The same goes for the S60 sedan and all-electric C40 Recharge.

Volvo V60

The last of Volvo’s iconic wagons are rapidly being bought up by Australian customers as the Volvo Car goes all SUV, at least for now.

Once stocks of the V60 Cross Country are sold, along with its sedan stable mate the S60 and the crossover electric C40 Recharge, Volvo Cars will be a SUV-only carmaker – until the ES90 sedan arrives later in the year.

Retailers estimate the last remaining V60s, S60s and C40s will leave forecourts within the next few weeks amid run-out incentives ahead of the incoming model year changeover.

Australians now buy more than four times as many SUVs as sedans and wagons, with sales of the latter falling by more than a quarter so far this year across all manufacturers.

Cult status

Volvo’s wagons have earned iconic status globally and locally – with some notching 2 million kilometres while handling pretty much anything thrown at them, or into them, like this one in rural New South Wales.

While Volvo’s wagons retain a cult following due to their versatility, durability, safety, comfort and surprisingly agile performance, mainstream consumer demand has shifted to SUVs – especially in recent years.

Australians now buy more than four times as many SUVs as sedans and wagons, with sales of the latter falling by more than a quarter so far this year across all manufacturers.

Hence carmakers focusing efforts on vehicles that cater to those consumer sentiment shifts. It means they can concentrate resources on making better, safer cars due to the economies of scale afforded by building upon one underlying manufacturing and technology platform.

But the V60 Cross Country still has its fans – and in recent years has notched some excellent reviews from those holding out against the rise of the SUV: “If you asked me to name a better, more frugal executive express, I'd struggle to find better value than this,” per Drive.

The S60 sedan has likewise won over supporters, particularly the S60 Recharge Black edition, as has the C40 Recharge – especially the twin motor variant.

Buyers aiming to secure the last Volvo wagons, sedans and crossovers in Australia should probably contact their local retailer sooner rather than later.
