Creating a digital key

The car's owner can create a new digital key at any time in settings. They can also share their digital key with family and friends.

 Tip

Digital key activation link

When you first set up your Volvo ID, you will receive an activation link via text message or email. Following this link opens the guide for creating a digital key in your phone's wallet app. However, if you skip this step during set up, you can still use this link at any time.

If you need a new activation link, for example if you lose your phone, you can request a new link by logging in to the Volvo Portal website.

Creating a digital key via the centre display

You need to be inside the car while setting up your digital key. You also need to make sure that:
  • the car is stationary
  • you are logged into the car owner's account in the centre display
  • both your car and your phone are connected to the internet
  • both your car and your phone are updated to the latest software version
  • Bluetooth is enabled on your phone
  • you have access to the Volvo ID registered to the car owner's account.1
Press the car symbol in the bottom bar and go to Settings.
Go to Profiles.
Select the owner profile and go to Car keysSet up digital key.
Scan the QR code in the centre display using your phone and follow the link that appears.
Authenticate yourself using your Volvo ID.
The pairing guide appears on your phone.
Follow the guide.
If pairing is successful, your digital key appears in your phone's wallet app.

After creating a digital key

Once you’ve set up your digital key, you can share it with family and friends. Open the digital key in your phone's wallet app to find the sharing option. This lets you send an invitation link to the person you want to share the key with. Opening this link on the device that they want to store their key on opens the setup guide in their wallet app.

 Tip

Moving a key to another device

When you have finished setting up a digital key, you will receive an activation link. This link can be used to move the digital key to another device, such as a new phone. This can also be done via the centre display by accessing the owner's profile settings, selecting your primary digital key and pressing Change device.

  1. 1If you're not the car's owner, you can't create your own digital key. You need to ask the owner to share their digital key with you instead.
