Volvo’s flagship seven-seater is the best large luxury SUV in Australia, according to Which Car? by Wheels.
In the best large luxury SUV category, the Volvo EX90 was up against the BMW X7; Genesis GV80, Lexus LX, Mercedes-Benz GLS; Porsche Cayenne and Range Rover.
It beat them all – petrol, diesel, PHEV, the lot. Which is a repeat of last year’s performance.
“Big, beautifully refined and packed with technology, it combines genuine seven-seat practicality with the effortless performance expected of a modern premium EV,” according to the judges’ verdict.
“Importantly for a large SUV, the EX90 works as a family vehicle … It’s also surprisingly enjoyable to drive … The 2026 Performance flagship is particularly potent.”
While Wheels noted the EX90 carries a six-figure price tag, the base model is priced considerably lower than any of the other contenders Wheels shortlisted and the EX90 bested.
“Expensive though it remains, the EX90 succeeds because it doesn’t sacrifice the fundamentals of a great large SUV in pursuit of electrification,” per Wheels.
“Comfortable, spacious, exceptionally quiet and unexpectedly engaging, it’s a convincing electric flagship.”
Double win: best large electric SUV
The EX90 again scored a double win – seeing off BMW, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz and Polestar to be crowned Best Large SUV in the fully electric category, just as it was last year.
“Winning Wheels Best Large SUV – Electric 2026 takes more than impressive performance figures or the longest driving range. It requires excellence across the ownership experience, and we think that’s precisely where the Volvo EX90 separates itself from the field,” according to Wheels judges.
“Combining a genuinely luxurious interior, outstanding safety features, adult seven-seat practicality and EV tech, the EX90 is a complete package.”
Wheels nodded to the “luxurious” cabin and “exceptional build quality”, the EX90’s infotainment and driver assist capabilities, and faster charging 800V architecture upgrade as standouts.
But they said the fact the EX90 is more than the sum of those parts is what keeps it ahead of the pack.
“Ultimately, the Volvo EX90 wins here because it delivers more than just an excellent electric drivetrain. It’s beautifully built, quite practical, supremely comfortable and packed with useful technology.”
