An Autonomous Future
As an innovative, unified front, Volvo and Uber look forward to working as a team while developing new vehicles that will incorporate impressive autonomous driving technologies. Looking ahead, we dream of fully autonomous and driverless vehicles enhancing our everyday lives and enabling us to live a life with less stress and more free time.
Volvo will manufacture vehicles to serve as the foundation of this joint effort, and both Uber and Volvo will continue to build upon this platform with the goal of fostering a better tomorrow. By adding Uber’s self-developed autonomous driving systems to Volvo vehicles, we hope to impact the way we travel and commute. As a team, a combined $300M is being contributed to this groundbreaking venture.
“Volvo is a world leader in the development of active safety and autonomous drive technology and possesses an unrivaled safety credibility. We are very proud to be the partner of choice for Uber, one of the world’s leading technology companies. This alliance places Volvo at the heart of the current technological revolution in the automotive industry.”

The new base Volvo vehicle will be developed on our fully modular Scalable Product Architecture (SPA). As one of the most advanced car architectures in the world, SPA is currently utilized on the XC90, S90, and V60 models. We have developed SPA as part of our global industrial transformation program with the goal of preparing ourselves for the ever-evolving future.
Our future-forward mindset is one of the qualities that attracted Uber to Volvo, and it is this mindset that brings us great confidence in what’s to come. Future development work will be conducted by Uber and Volvo Cars engineers in close collaboration, and add to the impressive scalability of the SPA platform to include all needed features necessary to safely implement autonomous vehicles into our lives.
“Over one million people die in car accidents every year. These are tragedies that self-driving technology can help solve, but we can’t do this alone. That’s why our partnership with a great manufacturer like Volvo is so important. Volvo is a leader in vehicle development and best-in-class when it comes to safety. By combining the capabilities of Uber and Volvo we will get to the future faster, together.” – Travis Kalanick, Chief Executive of Uber
