From the very beginning Volvo Cars has existed for people who care about the world we live in and the people around us. We have made it our mission to make life easier, better and safer for everyone. Today, we’re still as focused as ever on safety, quality, and care for the environment.

Our South Carolina factory

On September 25, 2015, Volvo Cars broke ground on its first US plant in Ridgeville, Berkeley County, South Carolina. The 2.3 million sq. ft. facility, which sits on 1,600 acres and includes a body shop, paint shop, battery assembly plant, final assembly, a vehicle processing center and an office building.

About Volvo Cars

We’re very proud of the great personalities who have made Volvo Cars what it is today. From our founders Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson, to Pelle Petterson, who designed the iconic P1800, to Nils Bohlin, inventor of the three-point safety belt. And now the people of South Carolina who will help us usher in a new era for Volvo Cars by manufacturing the fully electric Volvo EX90.

Key plant milestones.

January 2016: Broke ground in September 2015 and started construction

Late 2017: Started production

June 2018: Revealed the all new S60 and officially opened the plant

August 2018: S60 production began

March 2019: S60 exports began

Late 2019: Main office campus and Volvo Car University opened

2023: EX90 production begins

We understand sustainability as responsible corporate behavior that leads to long-term business success and is in harmony with the environment and society. Volvo Cars currently operates an onsite solar farm that produces approximately 15% of the site’s total energy demand.

Since 2017, Volvo Cars has maintained a grants fund program to support local organizations in four program areas: education, the environment, safety and quality of life. Non-profit groups who share our values of safety, quality, education and protecting the environment are encouraged to apply.
