Safety now. For our future.

In-Use Verification Program

Participate in our In-Use Verification Program to support our climate action ambitions with responsible emissions monitoring.

Our Goal

As part of our continuing effort to produce the highest quality vehicles on the road, and in support of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and California Air Resources Board (CARB) regulations, Volvo Cars has committed to evaluating the efficiency of our vehicle emission systems through the In-Use Verification Program.

Environmental Sustainability and Volvo - Car driving down a country road

Sustainability is as important to Volvo Cars as safety.

As a mobility provider, we recognize that we are part of the problem of climate change and have a responsibility to act. By reducing emissions across our entire value chain, we aim to become a climate-neutral company by 2040.

How the Volvo In-Use Verification Works - Car driving on road in city

How we test

Your vehicle will be handled with the utmost care and respect and returned to you as quickly as possible. Participating vehicles are tested by our engineers to evaluate the effectiveness of your vehicle's emissions systems. We simulate typical driving conditions in order to collect data about the emissions of your vehicle.

Government Mandated Testing

This government mandated testing for all manufacturers involves the inspection and testing of your vehicle's powertrain and emission-related components.

Randomly Selected in Certain Regions

Volvo owners are randomly selected from a list of vehicles in certain regions. Procurement of vehicles occurs in California, Colorado, Michigan, West Virginia and the surrounding areas. Once vehicles are procured, they are picked up or safely and securely shipped in enclosed trucks to our designated testing locations.

Invitation Process & Eligibility Screening

Owners near a testing facility in each region will be sent an invitation by mail that includes a questionnaire, program details, and a return envelope. The information owners provide will be screened for eligibility to participate in the program.

Evaporative testing. We simulate two scenarios.

Sealed Housing Evaporative Determination (SHED)

The vehicle is placed in a SHED chamber where the temperature is varied to measure the level of vapors that are coming from the vehicle and its components.

On-board Refueling Vapor Recovery (ORVR)

In the refueling scenario, the vehicle is placed in an enclosure called the ORVR chamber, to measure the vapors released during the refueling process.

Exhaust testing. Emissions monitored in 3 specific driving conditions on a dynamometer.

City

The city driving cycle lasts about 30 minutes and mimics the stop-and-go style, with an average speed of 20 MPH and a maximum speed of 60 MPH.

Highway

The highway driving cycle lasts about 15 minutes and simulates a more consistent driving speed, with an average speed of 50 MPH and a maximum speed of 60 MPH.

Supplemental Federal Test Procedure

US06 Test Cycle is about 10 minutes and simulates on-road acceleration, with an average speed of 50 MPH and a maximum speed of 80 MPH.

Frequently Asked Questions

When will I receive my incentive?

Once your vehicle is picked up after testing.

How are the test results used?

The information from IUVP testing is provided to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) https://www.epa.gov/ve-certification/in-use-testing and the California Air Resources Board (CARB) https://ww2.arb.ca.gov/light-duty-in-use-compliance-programs. The results are used to confirm vehicle emissions are performing as expected.

How long will testing take?

Usually 2-3 weeks for a test, but scheduling and logistics may increase the time. We will provide information about any delay.

If any vehicle repairs are needed, will Volvo fix them for me?

Volvo Cars will coordinate with your local Volvo retailer to repair/replace parts affecting vehicle emissions found during testing at no cost to you while keeping the faulty parts for investigation. Missed maintenances like oil changes, tire rotations, etc., will not be performed through this program.

Why was I contacted by someone other than Volvo?

Our third-party contract company is responsible for contacting eligible Volvo owners about this program. If you have any concerns, please contact us at: 1-800-458-1552

How many miles will be put on my vehicle?

Approximately 100-150 miles. Total mileage will vary depending on the number and types of tests performed and the distance driven to and from the testing facility.

What type of rental vehicle will I receive during testing?

Participants will be provided a newer-model Volvo or a similar rental vehicle if a Volvo is unavailable while testing is being performed.
