Volvo EC40 model year 2026 - Overview
The Volvo EC40 was the first Volvo model in the company’s history to be designed as pure electric only. It is based on an advanced vehicle platform known as the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA).
The EC40 is a crossover with all the benefits of an SUV, but with a lower and sleeker design featuring improved aerodynamics. It features a striking rear-end design to go with this lower roofline. Inside, the EC40 offers the high seating position that most Volvo drivers prefer and the standard fixed panoramic roof adds a feeling of light and space.
The advanced air purifier system prevents up to 80 per cent of hazardous PM 2.5 particles entering the cabin. No matter the conditions outside, the solution can help occupants enjoy better and healthier air quality, while having the possibility to monitor particle and pollen levels outside the car.
Connectivity and infotainment
Like the XC40, the EC40 comes equipped with an infotainment system jointly developed with Google with featuring built-in Google apps and services. Intuitive and convenient, this next generation infotainment system offers customers unprecedented personalisation and an unparalleled connectivity, which is further enhanced through Volvo Car Connect Plus. This provides unlimited mobile data (for in-car apps and vehicle communication) for 4 years.
Thanks to Volvo Car Connect, the EC40 will continue to improve over time as it receives software updates over the air, keeping continuously up to date with the latest technology.
For model year 2026, the EC40 was one of the last Volvo models to come equipped with the new Volvo Car UX. It’s designed to be a safe and enjoyable way to interact with your car’s central infotainment screen, more focused and personalised than its predecessor. A further upgrade to the car includes the next-generation Snapdragon Cockpit Platform, making our existing Google Android Auto-based infotainment system much faster and much more responsive. The infotainment system in these models will be more than twice as fast as the outgoing system, with graphics generation that is up to 10 times faster.
Powertrain technology
The EC40 comes with 4 different powertrain options: Single Motor, Single Motor Extended, Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance. The Twin Motor and Twin Motor Performance variants supplying 408 and 442hp respectively, utilising one motor on the front axle and one on the rear axle. These are powered by an 82kWh battery that can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in 28 minutes *. These models have a certified range of up to 340 and 337 miles respectively (WLTP Combined) **.
The Single Motor and Single Motor Extended variants produce 238 and 252hp respectively, via one electric motor on the rear axle. The Single Motor version comes with a 69kWh battery and a range of up to 300 miles (WLTP Combined) *, with the battery charging from 10 to 80 per cent of capacity in 33 minutes **. Meanwhile, the Single Motor Extended version possesses an 82kWh battery that has a range of up to 358 miles (WLTP Combined) *, with the battery charging from 10 to 80 per cent of capacity in 28 minutes **.
More details around the powertrain offer can be found in the technical specifications.
Safety and driver assistance
The battery is protected by a safety cage which consists of a frame of extruded aluminium. It has been embedded in the middle of the car’s body structure, creating a built-in crumple zone around it. The battery’s location under the floor of the car also lowers the centre of gravity of the car for better protection against roll-overs.
At the rear, the electric powertrain has been integrated in the body structure to realise a better distribution of collision forces away from the cabin.
The EC40 is also equipped with Volvo Cars’ latest Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS): a modern, scalable active safety system that consists of an array of radars, cameras, and ultrasonic sensors. This platform enables the development and deployment of active safety systems, such as the detection of other road users, automatic braking and collision avoidance. Through the Pilot Assist function, it also allows for gentle driver support from standstill up to highway speeds.
