Safety is a founding principle and living philosophy since 1927 and we work hard to stay at the forefront of the industry by taking an overall approach to safety, which has proven effective in real traffic situations.
Our broad knowledge is the foundation of our development and derives from real traffic situations. We strive to understand how and why accidents happen. Having a close collaboration with an insurance company, Volvia, has helped us get detailed information about incidents and the outcome of accidents with Volvo cars in Sweden. Our Traffic Accident Research team, established in 1970, has collected accident data from more than 40 000 accidents involving Volvo cars. We perform real life accident reconstructions in our state-of-the-art crash laboratory. Then we apply this valuable data and unique knowledge when designing new Volvo cars.
Developing crash-safe cars is a given. Volvo Cars is also a leader in the field of active safety with solutions such as the pedestrian detection with full auto brake and City Safety; an automated brake system that contributes to, at lower speeds, avoiding or reducing the consequences of an accident. City Safety is an active system, while crossbeams and airbags are passive systems that protect passengers in the event of a collision.
Our solutions for protecting road users outside of the car are unique to the industry. True to our heritage, we will keep creating innovative safety systems that protect not only the driver and passengers within the car, but also people in the car’s surrounding.
By 2020, our aim is that nobody shall be seriously injured or killed in a new Volvo. In the longer perspective our vision is that cars should not crash at all.
