Ready when you are

Wake up to a fully charged car, ready when you are. Simply plug in your PHEV, or schedule it to charge during off-peak hours to save on electricity costs (if you pay by hour). With our next-generation batteries and 6.4kW 2-phase onboard charger, a full charge takes as little as three hours.

Pre-set comfort

Enjoy a perfectly pre-conditioned cabin. Volvo plug-in hybrid cars let you set the ideal temperature as your battery charges, improving comfort and battery performance. Drive more comfortably in your compact or large family PHEV.

Charge on the go

Regenerative braking keeps you going. Volvo plug-in hybrid cars boost battery range and fuel economy by converting braking energy into stored power. That’s hybrid efficiency.

Long electric range

At Volvo, we want to create a confident and seamless transition to the fully electric future of driving. So we designed our plug-in hybrids to offer enough electric range to power your daily commute and city driving. Ideal for wherever your day takes you.

Energy usage highlights

Take control of hybrid car energy efficiency with Volvo. Monitor and optimise your battery and fuel consumption effortlessly. Keep your plug-in hybrid running efficiently for family trips, city drives, or long-distance adventures.

*To benefit from the shorter charging times our new onboard charger can provide, you need to charge with a 3-phase charger. The charging time is preliminary and derived from estimates and calculations performed by Volvo Cars and these outcomes are not guaranteed. Please also note that charging times can vary and are dependent on factors such as outdoor temperature, current battery temperature, charging equipment, battery condition and car condition. Vehicle certification pending.

What do you want to know about Volvo plug-in hybrid cars?

Do hybrid cars have a high towing capacity?

Volvo plug-in hybrids offer great towing capacity, especially thanks to efficient AWD. Maximum towing capacity depends on the make and model of your Volvo car.

How can I charge my electric car at home?

We recommend a Volvo Cars wallbox (available soon). It delivers faster, more efficient charging than a regular wall socket. Wallboxes have an integrated cable holder and a 5-metre charging cable with a Type 2 socket (IEC 62196), making it compatible with all fully electric Volvo cars. Have your wallbox installed indoors or outdoors. It's water resistant, and you can purchase a pedestal to install the wallbox where a wall surface isn't available. Connect to the wallbox via Wi-Fi to see charging status, schedule charging, and more using your smartphone, computer or tablet. Dynamic LED lighting on the front of the wallbox uses different colours to help you check your charging status at a glance. Learn more about at-home charging.

Do hybrid cars need to be charged?

Yes, all hybrid cars need to be charged, but only plug-in hybrids can be charged at electric charging points at home or on the road. Batteries in mild hybrids and full hybrids rely on internal charging through regenerative braking. Learn more about charging.

Are hybrid cars good for long distance driving?

Volvo plug-in hybrids are designed to travel long distances without you having to worry about the battery range. The dual power of the combustion engine and electric motor ensures increased efficiency and performance across long distances.

Are all hybrid cars automatic?

Our entire range of plug-in hybrid cars feature automatic transmission.

What is the difference between mild hybrids, full hybrids and plug-in hybrid cars?

Mild hybrid cars have a combined starter motor and electric generator that gently supports the combustion engine to use fuel more efficiently, but they cannot run on electricity alone. They use the combined starter and generator for smooth take-offs and braking or slowing the car, while recovering brake energy to be stored in a small 48-volt battery. Full hybrid cars also generate battery power through regenerative braking, but they have a more powerful battery. So, they can run on pure electric for short distances or in tandem with the petrol engine. Our plug-in hybrid vehicles are designed with a considerably larger 400-volt battery and better performance with the added option of different driving modes. This means that the fully electric range is larger still and many drivers can operate their car on the electric motor alone. The plug-in hybrid battery is mainly charged by plugging into a home wallbox or public charging point. But it can also be charged while driving through brake energy regeneration.
