Connecting the Volvo Cars app to the vehicle

Download the Volvo Cars app and connect it to your vehicle to access remote features, manage your Volvo, and check its status.

When you connect the Volvo Cars app to the vehicle, you set up a vehicle profile and connect your Volvo ID to both the profile and the vehicle.

The way you Connect the app to your vehicle can vary depending on vehicle model and model year.

Updating software

Make sure that your vehicle and the Volvo Cars app have the newest software version installed. You can check your vehicle's software version via settings in the center display.

Removing profiles from a pre-owned vehicle

If you have a pre-owned vehicle, make sure the previous owners' profile has been removed from the vehicle. If they still have a profile, ask the previous owner to remove the vehicle from their Volvo Cars app, or contact Volvo support.

Connecting the app to the vehicle

This section is applicable to vehicles with Google built-in.

When you connect the Volvo Cars app to the vehicle, you set up a vehicle profile and connect your Volvo ID to both the profile and the vehicle. The first person to Connect the app to the vehicle is given an owner profile with full permissions, however they don't need to be the legal owner of the vehicle. Additional users are given co-driver profiles. The way you connect the app to the vehicle depends on which type of profile you are setting up.

Owner profile

You can connect the Volvo Cars app to the vehicle via the app or the vehicle. If connecting via the app, sign in with your Volvo ID and follow the instructions in the app.

Note

If a Volvo retailer has registered your Volvo ID as the owner, your name will be displayed when you begin connecting the app to the vehicle. Sign in with the same Volvo ID to complete the connection.

Connecting the Volvo Cars app via the vehicle

  1. Sit in the driver's seat with your two key fobs and your phone.

    The profile setup tutorial appears in the center display.
    Note
    If a Volvo retailer registered your Volvo ID as the owner, you don't need to bring the keys into the vehicle.
  2. Follow the instructions for profile setup in the vehicle's center display.
    The app opens and you are connected to the vehicle.

    Selecting the owner profile

    If you have already created an owner profile, the profile setup may not appear. Make sure you have the owner profile selected and go to ProfilesVolvo Cars app.

    Scanning the QR code

    You can scan the QR code using your phone's camera, or via the Volvo Cars app

Invite other drivers to set up co-driver profiles and connect their app to the vehicle by sending an invitation link from the Volvo Cars app. There are instructions on how to do this in a separate article.

Co-driver profile

You can connect the Volvo Cars app to the vehicle via the app, the vehicle's center display or an invitation link sent by the person with an owner profile. If you connect through an invitation, a vehicle profile is automatically created for you. If connecting via the app, sign in with your Volvo ID and follow the instructions in the app. Follow the steps below to connect via the vehicle.

  1. Sit in the vehicle with your phone.
  2. Go to your vehicle's settings and press Profiles.
  3. If you already have a vehicle profile, select your profile and go to Volvo Cars app.

    If you don't already have a profile, add a new one by pressing the plus icon.

  4. Follow the instructions in the display.
    The app opens and you are connected to the vehicle.

Switching between connected vehicles

If you have more than one vehicle connected to your Volvo Cars app, you can switch between them via the home tab or the profile tab .

Adding a vehicle in the Volvo Cars app

This section is applicable to vehicles with Sensus Infotainment system.

If a retailer or Volvo support has connected your Volvo ID to your vehicle, you don't need to add your vehicle in the app. You'll see your connected vehicle in the app when you sign in.

Make sure your vehicle is in an area with cellular coverage and your phone has an internet connection.

  1. Sign in to the Volvo Cars app with your Volvo ID.
    • If you don't have any other vehicles connected to the app, press Add your car on the welcome screen.
    • If you have other vehicles connected to the app, go to the profile tab and press Your carsAdd car.
  2. Add your vehicle's VIN[1] and follow the instructions in the app that are relevant for your profile.

Note

Accessing all features in the app

To access all features in the app, you need to have an active subscription for connected services. You can see your subscription status, or set up a subscription, via the vehicle tab in the Volvo Cars app. Once you have an active subscription, you'll have app access to the vehicle. You can also contact your retailer or Volvo support for help.

If you have an owner profile, you can give other drivers access to your vehicle in the app. There are instructions on how to do this in a separate article.

Switching between connected vehicles

If you have more than one vehicle connected to your Volvo Cars app, you can switch between them via the home tab or the profile tab .
