When the students become the teachers

Six promising young people from India and Venezuela spent the summer at Volvo Cars learning, teaching, and experiencing what it's like working - and being welcomed in - Sweden.

In 2018, a group of ambitious Volvo Cars employees launched a pilot project with the goal of finding talents with challenging backgrounds outside the EU. The team then brought these talented students or graduates to the company, offering them opportunities and travel experience they would otherwise never be able to access. For around three months, the interns work to grow their knowledge while adding genuine value to the team they’re embedded in.

The programme covers costs related to migration, flight tickets, housing and monthly salary for the candidates. Each participant is assigned a volunteer Volvo mentor; a process which offers growth for the mentors just as much as the mentees.

This summer, we welcomed six talented students and graduates from India and Venezuela. They were all proposed by their universities, interviewed by the Programme Board, and matched up with teams at Volvo Cars in need of their skills such as software development, data science and mechanical engineering. They had a manager and mentor and were encouraged to bring their own insights to their work.

We sat down with these inspiring young people to see what they thought about their experience. Check out the video above.
