Safety first: family cars and child safety features
For us, safety always comes first. That’s why at Volvo Cars, we’re committed to developing safety features in our cars that help protect everyone.

By combining real-world crash testing with cutting-edge technology, we’ve created features and products that help keep children safe in the cars. This focus also puts us at the forefront of child safety innovation — offering family cars with exceptional safety standards.
The standard safety features in each of our Volvo Car models are part of our Safe Space Technology. With smart, reliable technology, we help keep you, and others, safer on the road. Thanks to innovative systems, we’re able to design protective and preventative safety features that is helping to protect people inside the car as well as those on the outside.
In this article, you’ll learn more about safety features to protect your children, essential safety functions and what to consider when choosing a new family car.
Safety features to protect your children
It’s vital that children are securely seated in the car, just like adults, whether it’s moving or stationary.
Here are some of our most important child safety features, designed to help prevent accidents and minimise harm if one does occur:
Child safety locks: With integrated child locks in your Volvo, you can lock the rear doors from the driver’s seat, so your child can’t accidentally open them, whether the car is in motion or standing still.
ISOFIX anchorages: Volvo cars come equipped with ISOFIX anchorages, ensuring secure installation of child car seats that use the ISOFIX system. The outer rear seats are i-Size approved.
Child presence reminder: It’s human to forget. Sensors in the car can remind you if a child or someone else is left on the seats.
Lower tether anchorages: To make installing rear-facing safety belt-mounted child seats with lower tethers simpler and robust, our cars are equipped with lower tether anchorages.

Child restraint recommendations
To help ensure your children are protected throughout the journey, a high-quality and crash-tested child restraint is a must. At Volvo Cars, we see child safety as a system where the car, the child restraint and the users all work together. The child restraint’s role is to direct crash forces to the child’s stronger body parts, but true protection comes from combining that with a car built to the highest safety standards.
Volvo Cars has led child seat innovation for decades, and we continue to do so. Our child seats and boosters are also custom-designed to fit seamlessly into our cars. Here’s a quick overview of what we offer:
Rear-facing child seat
A rear-facing seat with an integral harness, approved for children from 61 to 115 cm. Volvo Cars recommends keeping children rear-facing until at least age four. In the event of a collision, the force is distributed over a larger area, more evenly across the body, helping protect the child’s head and delicate neck. The seat is designed to provide high safety and comfort, with optimal protection in the event of a collision and generous legroom for the child. Being safety belt attached, it can be used on most seats, offering greater flexibility for the user.

Booster seat*
Once your child outgrows their rear-facing seat, we offer specially designed, forward facing booster seats. These help position the safety belt correctly and reduce the risk of abdominal injuries. Approved for children from 105 to 150 cm, we recommend using one until at least 140 cm, around age 10. The booster seat provides access to the vehicle’s restraints for optimal protection when your child is forward-facing. The lap belt is guided over the hips and the shoulder belt across the chest and shoulder. The headrest can be adjusted to ensure a comfortable, mid-shoulder position of the belt.
Our booster seat comes with a backrest for added support and comfort. The backrest can be detached, turning it into a booster cushion, approved for children between 138 and 150 cm, which offers a more compact option while still helping to position the safety belt correctly.

Integrated booster seat
Another type of booster seat that is always there when you need it. Selected Volvo models feature integrated booster seats that are easy to unfold when needed and fold into the seat when not. When you use it, it’s simple to just buckle in your child with the safety belt. Choose the option that works best for your needs in the moment. The integrated version adjusts your child’s position to ensure they benefit fully from the car’s safety systems.
Note: If you prefer a child seat from another brand, many third-party options are also compatible. Just be sure to follow your car’s manual and car seat manufacturer’s instructions for safe installation.
Safety for everyone in the car
At Volvo Cars, we want everyone to feel secure on the road. With decades of data and safety testing behind us, we continue to evolve the protective features in our cars. Today, you’ll find both time-tested systems – like the safety belt – and innovative new technologies designed to protect all occupants.
Here are just a few of the safety features that are working to support you behind the wheel:
360° camera: Get a full view around the car during low speed manouvering, helping to prevent backover accidents.
Collision avoidance: If the car detects a potential collision with a vehicle, cyclist, or pedestrian, it issues audible, visual, and brake pulse warnings to help you avoid impact. In urgent situations, the car can even brake automatically.
Run-off road mitigation: This feature helps keep you on the road. If your car veers off lane markings at speeds between 65–140 km/h, the system can brake or steer you back into your lane.
Lane keeping aid: BLIS alerts you with a light in your side mirror if there’s a vehicle in your blind spot — and can even steer the car to help keep you safe. It even works when cars are rapidly approaching from behind.
Park Pilot Assist: Cars with automatic parking assist can park themselves. Just sit back and leave steering, braking and gear shifts to the car — you only have to supervise.
Lane keeping aid: If you unintentionally drift out of your lane, cars with lane keeping aid can gently help steer you back into position.
