A new kind of Volvo
By the mid-1990s, the world was falling in love with off-road exploration, and drivers wanted cars that could keep up with their adventurous lifestyles. In 1997, Volvo Cars introduced the V70 Cross Country, or V70 XC, marking a bold departure from our traditional line-up of practical estates.

Built on the foundation of the Volvo 850 AWD, our first all-wheel-drive estate, the V70 Cross Country represented a new chapter. With higher ground clearance, reinforced underpinnings, and a rugged design featuring tough body cladding, two-tone styling, and the now-iconic “Cross Country” badge, it was designed to stand apart both on and off the road.

Made for the unexpected
The V70 Cross Country was more than a visual statement. Its robust all-wheel-drive system and turbocharged engine delivered all-terrain confidence. Volvo Cars’ hallmark focus on safety aimed to provide drivers with a secure and effortless driving experience, whether on highways, snowy mountain roads, or gravel trails. Inside, canvas-leather upholstery balanced durability with comfort, making every journey a refined yet practical experience. It was a car built for those who wanted the best of both worlds: the utility and safety of a Volvo estate, combined with the freedom to venture far beyond city streets.

A pioneer with lasting influence
The introduction of the V70 Cross Country marked a significant turning point for Volvo Cars. More than just a response to the off-road trend of the 1990s, it pioneered a new category for the brand: premium estates designed to embrace adventure without sacrificing safety or comfort. The formula proved influential, shaping the Cross Country line that continues in Volvo Cars’ portfolio today and inspiring a generation of drivers to look beyond the conventional limits of an estate car.

The fully electric Volvo EX30 Cross Country carries forward the idea of blending practicality with rugged capability. With increased ground clearance, extra cladding, and the latest technology, it reinterprets the spirit of the original V70 Cross Country for a modern, sustainable era of driving.
