Our Volvo Story
Our Volvo Story is a tribute to the people who have been the heartbeat of our brand in the US. Their unwavering loyalty, often spanning decades, reflects the commitment we share in having a positive impact on the world we live in and the people around us.

Celebrating 70 years in the US, and the impactful stories that make Volvo, Volvo.
From the very outset, Volvo Cars has been a brand for people who care about the world we live in and the people around us. We have made it our mission to make life safer, easier, and better for everyone. For a better future. For life.

Kevin, Sean & Sean: Smythe Volvo Cars
In 1966, and at the age of 23, Sean Flanagan paid $5,000 for a Volvo franchise, which included five cars, a box of parts and the signage. Today, two of his six children – Kevin and Sean – now lead the business at Smythe Volvo Cars, bringing the Volvo family feeling into the lives of their customers and local community.

Quinnshona ‘Meka’ Sumpter: Volvo Car Charleston Plant
When Volvo Cars began recruiting for its first manufacturing plant in the US, Meka took the opportunity to get in on the ground floor as one of their first 100 hires. Today, three of her kids work alongside her across different areas of the business. And if she has it her way, her grandchildren will work there one day too.

Shannon & Hannah Haggstrom: McDonald Volvo Cars
As a kid, Hannah Haggstrom always wanted to do things with her dad Shannon. When Hannah made the decision to attend Volvo trade school, she started her journey as the next generation of technicians in the Haggstrom household. Today, they work side-by-side on Volvos both old and new.

Celebrating 70 years in the US
Since our first car was sold in North America in 1955, we’ve been driven by a collective commitment to people, safety, and innovation. As Volvo Cars approaches its centennial anniversary, our region is also celebrating a remarkable milestone: 70 years in the United States. In the spirit of both our heritage and our future, it is the perfect moment to reflect on our journey and the values that continue to guide us.
