That’s why we’re committed to handling your data with care, keeping it secure, and being transparent about how we use it.
Volvo Cars continuously develop new products and services to provide you with the freedom to move in a personal, sustainable, and safe way.
This notice applies to our interactions with individuals, such as existing and potential customers, website visitors, business partners and their employees and our shareholders.
Country-specific deviations may apply, see the relevant additions where relevant.
We refer to the different individuals we interact with as “you” or "your”. Our use of your personal data is called processing.
This notice does not apply to:
Special vehicles (such as police vehicles)
Processing of personal data that does not leave the vehicle (local processing)
Processing of personal data when you interact with one of our retailers (such as when you buy a vehicle)
Your use of software, apps and services provided by third parties (please see each service provider’s own terms and conditions as well as their privacy policies or other notices for information on how they process your personal data). Vehicles with Google built-in may process external camera data on the vehicle pursuant to Google terms, in order to provide and improve Google Maps. Learn more here.
1. Who we are
The entity responsible for the processing of personal data described in this notice is Volvo Car Corporation, having its registered office at Assar Gabrielssons Väg, SE-405 31 Gothenburg, Sweden, company registration number 556074-3089, and Volvo Car USA LLC hereinafter referred to as “Volvo Cars”, “we”, or “us”. If other entities are processing personal data together with us, so called joint controllers, this will be specified. . We refer to Volvo Car Corporation and its group companies as ("we", “Volvo Cars”, “our” and “us”). We are a global company and provide products and services worldwide. You can find more information about the group companies operating in the different markets here.
If you are a California resident, you may have specific rights afforded to you; see Section 9.

3. Legal basis for collection and use of personal data
All processing of personal data needs to be justified. This is referred to as having a "legal basis”. The legal bases we rely on when processing personal data are described below. The legal basis differs depending on what purpose we use your personal data for.
Necessary for the performance of a contract: This is used when the processing of your personal data is necessary to enter into and perform our obligations under a contract with you.
Necessary to fullfil our, or a third party’s, legitimate interest: This is used when the processing of your personal data is necessary for us to pursue a business interest which is not overridden by your interest of not having personal data processed.
Consent given by you: This is used when you provide us with your consent to process your personal data for specific reasons.
Necessary to fullfil a legal obligation: This is used when we are required by law to process your personal data.
4. Types of personal data we collect and use
Personal data is information that directly or indirectly relates to you as a natural living person. We may receive personal data directly from you, from the company you represent, other group companies, from authorities, public records, publicly available resources and other third parties with whom we do business (e.g., retailers and financial partners).
For clarity and ease of understanding, we have categorized the different types of personal data into the following categories:

Some services and functions explained in this notice may not be available in your market. The Volvo Cars App and your vehicle may not have all services or functions listed in this notice. Therefore, some sections described below might not be applicable to you. For an explanation of vehicle functions, please check the “owner’s manual” for the relevant model.
5. Why we collect and use your personal data and how long we keep it

7. International transfers
Whenever we transfer personal data to other countries, we use tools and safeguards to make sure that such transfers comply with applicable law and that your personal data is granted a high level of protection.
In many cases, we have signed the so called standard contractual clauses issued by the European Commission (available at the European Commission’s website) as well as implementing other necessary safeguards such as encryption and pseudonymization.
8. Profiling
We use automated processing to gain a better understanding about you and your personal preferences (also known as profiling). We use profiling to, for example:
Customize and tailor marketing shown to you by analyzing or predicting your personal preferences based on information we have about you.
Customize and tailor your experience when you interact with our various channels such as our website.
Profiling does not carry any significant effect on you as an individual. Please note that you always have the right to object to our use of profiling as mentioned above.
9. Your rights
You have legal rights relating to our processing of your personal data. The rights may differ depending on which jurisdiction you are in and the nature of our processing.
You have the right to:
Right to withdraw consent: If you have given your consent for the processing of your personal data, you can withdraw it at any time. This will only affect our future use of your personal data.
Right to access your personal data: You can ask us for information regarding personal data that we have about you. In such a case, we will provide you with a copy of your personal data.
Right to rectification: If the information concerning you is not correct, you can request its rectification. If your data is incomplete, you may request that it be completed.
Right to restriction: You have the right to, under certain conditions, request us to restrict the processing of your personal data, if:
- you contest the accuracy of your personal data, for the period we need to verify the accuracy,
the processing is unlawful and you request the restriction of processing rather than erasure of your personal data,
we no longer need your personal data for the processing purpose but you require the data for the establishment, exercise or defense of legal claims, or
you object to the processing while we verify whether our legitimate grounds override yours.
Right to portability: You have the right to receive (in a structured, commonly used and machine-readable format) your personal data that you have provided to us, and, where technically feasible, request that we transmit your personal data (that you have provided to us) to another organization, if:
- we process your personal data by automated means;
we base the processing of your personal data on your consent, or our processing of your personal data is necessary for the execution or performance of a contract to which you are a party; and
your right to portability does not adversely affect the rights and the freedoms of other persons.
Right to erasure: You have the right to request that we delete the personal data we process about you. We must comply with this request if we process your personal data, unless the processing is necessary:
- to continue providing a service to you, such as an active subscription;
for exercising the right of freedom of expression and information;
for compliance with a legal obligation which requires processing by Union or Member State law to which we are subject;
for archiving purposes in the public interest, scientific or historical research purposes or statistical purposes; or
for the establishment, exercise or defense of legal claims.
Right to object: If we process your personal data based on our legitimate interest, you can object in that case we will no longer process your personal data, unless we can demonstrate compelling legitimate grounds and an overriding interest for the processing or for the establishment, exercise or defense of legal claims.

In the United States, data is collected and processed by Volvo Car USA, LLC which may be either the controller or processor of your data. If you are a California resident, you may have specific rights afforded to you; see Section 9.
Children's Privacy
Our services are not intended for use by children. We do not knowingly solicit or collect any Personal Data about children under the age of 13 nor market our products or services to them. If you believe that we might have any information from a child under age 13, please contact us to have that information deleted from our records.

Service providers | To facilitate Volvo Car USA’s sharing of energy use information with the California Air Resources Board (CARB) in connection with Volvo Car USA’s participation in the low carbon fuel standard (LCFS) program and to be eligible to receive LCFS credits. For example, we may share your VIN and charging station geolocation with a service provider to register participating vehicles. The service provider facilitates the sharing of information between Volvo Car USA and CARB. When shared, pseudonymized identifiers are tied to geolocation data to prevent double counting and fraud before CARB assigns its own alternative identifier to each registered VIN and associates the charging data to it. |
