Volvo EX40 Model year 2023 - Overview

The Volvo XC40 Recharge is Volvo’s first ever fully electric car. It is based on the best-selling XC40 compact premium SUV, the first Volvo model to win the prestigious European Car of the Year award.

Like the XC40, the XC40 Recharge is based on the Compact Modular Architecture (CMA), an advanced vehicle platform co-developed within the Geely Group.

In a new update, Volvo Cars designers have given the XC40 line-up a refresh to reinforce its cutting-edge design and modern statement.

A new front bumper and a frameless grille plate keep the all-electric XC40 Recharge visually in sync with the Volvo C40 Recharge, aligning the two cars that spearhead Volvo Cars’ electrification journey.

The signature Thor’s Hammer headlights are augmented with state-of-the-art pixel LED light technology, enabling them to automatically adapt to traffic in front and efficiently light up the road ahead without dazzling other drivers.

Additionally, new exterior colours and rims are made available, as well as premium leather-free upholstery options, offering further possibilities for personalisation.

The new exclusive Tailored Wool Blend upholstery in the Recharge models is made from 30 per cent responsibly produced wool and 70 per cent polyester with contrasting white piping, created to optimise the experience of contemporary, sustainable luxury.

The advanced air purifier system prevents up to 80 per cent of hazardous PM 2.5 particles from entering the cabin. No matter the conditions outside, the solution can help occupants enjoy better and healthier air quality, while having the possibility to monitor particle and pollen levels outside the car.

The 2023 Volvo XC40 also comes equipped with Recharge tyres for use all year round as standard or optional in Europe. These are the first tyres for year-round use to achieve A-class energy efficiency, an innovation that is in line with the company’s aim to offer more sustainable products.

Connectivity and infotainment The XC40 Recharge is equipped with an infotainment system jointly developed with Google. The infotainment system offers customers unprecedented personalisation, improved levels of intuitiveness and new embedded Google technology and services, such as the Google Assistant, Google Maps and apps on Google Play.

The XC40 Recharge is capable of receiving large software and operating system updates over the air. This enables the car to keep evolving and improving over time, rather than being at its peak when it leaves the factory.

Powertrain technology The XC40 Recharge AWD comes with twin electric motors, one on the front axle and one on the rear axle. These are powered by a 78kWh battery that can be fast charged from 10 to 80 per cent in just over 30 minutes *. The version has an estimated range of around 438 km (WLTP Combined) **.

The XC40 Recharge is also available with one electric single motor on the front axle. This version comes with a 69kWh battery. The battery, which can charge from 10 to 80 per cent of capacity in just over 30 minutes * on a fast-charging system, offers an anticipated range of up to 425 km (WLTP Combined) ** on a single charge under the WLTP drive cycle.

More details around the powertrain offer can be found in the technical specifications.

Safety and driver assistance While building on the excellent safety standards of the original XC40, Volvo Cars safety engineers had to completely redesign and reinforce the frontal structure of the XC40 Recharge to deal with the absence of an engine and the 500 kg weight of the high-voltage battery. At the same time, it has to meet Volvo Cars’ high safety requirements and help keep occupants as safe as in any other Volvo.

The battery is protected by a safety cage, which consists of a frame of extruded aluminium. This has been embedded in the middle of the car’s body structure, creating a built-in crumple zone around it. The battery’s location under the floor of the car also lowers the centre of gravity of the car for better protection against roll-overs.

At the rear, the electric powertrain has been integrated in the body structure to realise a better distribution of collision forces away from the cabin.

The XC40 Recharge is also equipped with a new, scalable Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) sensor platform that consists of an array of radars, cameras and ultrasonic sensors.

This platform enables the development and deployment of active safety systems, such as the detection of other road users, automatic braking and collision avoidance. It also allows for gentle driver support from standstill up to highway speeds, through the Pilot Assist function.

Notes: Described features might be optional. Descriptions and facts in this press material relate to Volvo Cars' international car range. Vehicle specifications and the exact customer offer may vary from one country to another, or not (yet) be available in all markets. Google, Android, Google Play and Google Maps are trademarks of Google LLC. * Charging times are dependent on factors such as outdoor temperature, current battery temperature, charging equipment, battery condition and car condition. ** The range according to the realistic WLTP driving cycle under controlled conditions for a new car. The real-world range may vary and could be improved via coming over-the-air software updates.
