Volvo Cars of North America and Continental Partner to Reduce Rollovers and Save Lives
Public Awareness Key to Fewer Serious Accidents
Irvine, Calif. (Sept. 3, 2003) – Volvo Cars of North America, LLC announced today it will be joining with Continental Teves, a leading supplier of Electronic Stability Control (ESC), in its aggressive public awareness initiative to educate consumers how technology available today can significantly reduce the risk of rollovers.
It is all part of Continental’s multi-million dollar “Safely There” mobile exhibit crisscrossing America between now and December demonstrating electronic stability control crash-avoidance technology with interactive, multi-media displays and a futuristic 3-D test-drive simulator. The Volvo XC90, the next generation sport utility vehicle, is equipped with Roll Stability Control (RSC) provided by Continental Teves. The XC90 will be a feature vehicle for the tour.
“More than 700 rollovers occur everyday, and we believe using technology currently available like ESC and RSC, that number can be dramatically reduced in a very short period of time,” says Dan Johnston, Product Communications for Volvo. “The key is public awareness and education, and that’s why we are partnering with Continental to add the XC90 to the “Safely There” campaign as a real world example of what this technology provides in terms of crash and rollover avoidance.”
Several recent studies conducted in Europe and Japan, where electronic stability control use as standard equipment in vehicles is much more widespread than in North America, show a 30-35 percent reduction in single-vehicle crashes and a reduction of $35 billion in economic costs.
“Stability control systems are the greatest features of a car you may never know saved your life,” says Bill Kozyra, president, Continental Teves North America. “These technologies are unseen, yet unwavering, helping drivers and passengers to arrive safely home without even knowing they may have narrowly missed becoming a crash statistic.”
