Polestar will not renew V8 Supercars contract after 2016 season

Polestar, a Volvo Car Group company, responsible for performance offers and motorsport activities of the group, has decided to not renew the three-year V8 Supercars contract that ends after the current season.

”We have enjoyed a good cooperation with Garry Rogers Motorsport and the championship organisers, but our strategy and business objectives requires us now to focus our attention to other technologies and championships in the near future,” said Niels Möller, Chief Operating Officer of Polestar. ”We will of course support the programme in order to achieve the best possible sporting results in 2016, however, we feel it is fair to all involved that we can provide a heads-up ahead of 2017 as early as possible. We would like to extend our gratitude to all involved parties in the programme and wish them the very best for the future.”

The programme, performed in cooperation with Volvo Car Australia and Garry Rogers Motorsport since 2014, has so far resulted in seven victories, 17 podium finishes, 17 pole positions and seven fastest laps.

The team has completed three out of 15 rounds of the 2016 season and is currently fourth in the teams’ championship and second in the drivers’ championship with driver Scott McLaughlin following a stunning double victory in the latest round at Phillip Island.

About Polestar

Polestar is a wholly owned Volvo Car Group company. The company was founded as a motorsport team in 1996 and has been successful in numerous championships, racing with various Volvo models. In 2009, Polestar started to offer performance related products and thereby intensified the business relations with Volvo Cars. The first performance cars, based on Volvo’s S60 and V60, were launched in 2014. In 2015, Volvo Cars acquired the performance unit of Polestar, to create an own company focused entirely on defining and promoting future premium performance offers. As a part of this work, Polestar is the assignor for motorsport activities for the group. Polestar is engaged in the FIA World Touring Car Championship from 2016 and has an on going engagement in the Scandinavian Touring Car Championship.
