For the second year running, Volvo Cars has been recognised by TIME magazine as one of the World’s Most Sustainable Companies – and this year, we’re breaking into the overall top 100.

The World’s Most Sustainable Companies is an initiative by TIME magazine with data and assessment from the statistics portal Statista. In the inaugural edition last year, we ranked 122nd. Since then, we’ve climbed the list – even as the criteria have become more stringent, with this year covering social and circular criteria to a larger extent.

Our improved rank on the overall list is a remarkable achievement in itself. But there’s more: in the Automotive Industry & Suppliers category, we rank number 4, and looking exclusively at car manufacturers, we grab the second place.

This recognition demonstrates that we walk the talk as we track towards our sustainability targets, and it showcases our dedication to both environmental and social responsibility. Aiming to be pioneers in protecting people and the planet, sustainability is at the heart of who we are as a company.

Electrification is one of the main pillars in our transformation, and with a fifth of our global sales consisting of fully electric cars, we continue to lead the fully electric transition among our premium legacy competitors. In addition, we’re committed to consistently reducing direct and indirect emissions from our cars and aim to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

When carrying out the ranking, TIME uses a rigorous methodology. They evaluate factors such as the companies’ performance in verified sustainability commitments and ratings, along with their own sustainability reporting.

They also take into consideration the analysis of a range of key performance indicators in the areas of environmental and social sustainability, covering environmental impact, gender equality, and more.

You can read more about the methodology used and explore the full rankings on TIME Magazine’s website.
