Bi-directional charging
Bi-directional charging turns your car into an active part of the energy ecosystem, letting it share power with your home, the grid, or supported devices.
Bi-directional charging can be used when available in your market, and with a compatible Volvo such as EX60, or other future models.Note
Key functions of bi-directional charging
- Vehicle-to-Home or V2H, allows you to send energy back to your home and can help lower your energy bill. This requires a home charger that supports bi-directional charging such as the Volvo wallbox, a home load balancer such as the Volvo real-time energy meter and a home energy management system or HEMS.
- Vehicle-to-Grid or V2G, enables you to sell energy back to the power grid during periods of high demand. This can help to among other things, support the local grid during heavy use periods.
- Vehicle-to-Load or V2L, allows you to power external devices such as charge an electric bicycle. This requires an adapter for the type 2 charging port on your car.
Requirements for bi-directional charging
To use bi-directional charging, you'll need:
- A compatible car, such as the EX60 or future models.
- A wallbox with bi-directional functionality, such as the Volvo wallbox.
- A home energy management system.
- Bi-directional charging being available in your market.
Benefits of bi-directional charging
Using bi-directional charging can provide several advantages, where the functionality will be rolled out in a staggered way and not all from start:
- Potential cost savings on home electricity bills by charging during low-rate times.
- Supports the grid with energy when required, offering an alternative energy solution if needed.
- Reduces overall strain on the power grid.
- Offers a back-up power supply for your home, for example during a power cut.
Battery care
Regular bi-directional charging shouldn’t significantly impact your car’s battery life. Volvo’s smart algorithms help to look after your battery by minimising degradation. Meaning that the lifespan and warranty of your battery is not effected through the use of bi-directional charging.
Energy management in the Volvo Cars app
In the Volvo Cars app you can monitor and control your bi-directional charging when it's connected to your car, wallbox and home energy management system.
